Honours modules
PPG614 Ecology and biology of disease organisms 16 credits On completion of this module students are acquainted with the various disease causing organisms on plants. Their role in the environment and biological cycles, including infection, reproduction, dispersal and survival of fungi, bacteria and viruses will receive special attention.
PPG624 Plant / Pathogen interactions 16 credits On completion of this module students are acquainted with critical interactions that take place between plant pathogens, their hosts and the biotic and abiotic environment. The influence of environmental factors and agricultural practices on disease development and the opportunities they present for disease control are dealt with in a holistic context.
PPG634 Epidemiology and control of diseases 16 credits On completion of this module students are acquainted with the practical assessment of disease and pathogen populations, temporal and spatial aspects of epidemiology, crop losses, and selected subjects relating to selection for disease resistance.
PPG644 Diagnosis of plant diseases 16 credits On completion of this module students are acquainted with advanced diagnostic techniques and methods according to which disease causing organisms are identified. The module includes advanced aspects of fungal, bacterial and viral taxonomy with special emphasis on fungi.
PPG696 Literature studies 24 credits The student compiles a review of a specific subject and delivers presentations of selected articles in plant pathology journals. On completion of this module the student is acquainted with literature searches, organizing information, the compilation of information according to a specific format, as well as in written and verbal communication skills.
