The symbolism of the CePHMa logo |
|
The main thrust of the Centre for Plant Health Management (CePHMa) is one of multi-disciplinary research on plants in general and crops in particular. In the CePHMa logo ‘multi-disciplinary’ is depicted by the eight small leaves in shades of green.
The ‘cluster’ of the leaves, as such, reflects two further symbolic meanings. Firstly, CePHMa functions as a ‘unit’ in terms of the ‘common goal’ that the different disciplines subscribe to in propagating plant health. Secondly, the arrangement of the leaves bears resemblance to the erstwhile olympic laurel awarded to athletes on the winner’s podium, depicting CePHMa’s objective to ‘champion’ plant health management on the African continent. The cluster of leaves runs down into a brown arm that represents the importance of abiotic parameters (such as edaphic factors) in understanding plant systems in a holistic context. This arm, in turn, runs into a cup-shaped structure straddled by the acronym CePHMa. This structure conveys two further symbolisms. Firstly, the cradle delicately balances on a pointed fulcrum, depicting the inclination of biotic systems to maintain stability. From this, ultimately, the acronym in the cradle is representative of the emphasis that CePHMa is the vehicle through which stability in the context of plant system dynamics is investigated.
